Nikau Café
Completed 1998
Interior Fit Out.
Light and the daily rituals of a busy, daytime Wellington café were key considerations when design work began on this generously-windowed space, housed in City Gallery Wellington.
Stainless steel, opaque glass and quilted birch veneer were chosen to make the most of the way light plays in different areas; with pale green walls being a nod to the white walls of the Gallery.
Ingredients and equipment live in custom designed storage units, while a hanging stainless steel shelving unit separates the service and seating area from an open kitchen. It also strategically frames the view into the workspace, keeping dirty dishes from view.
The café's courtyard, acoustic panels, and long curved plywood seat are more recent additions.
